Review: Enter Purgatory in The West of Dead

Purgatory, Wyoming, 1888. A place of gun smoke and darkness, sin and damnation, wendigos and witches. A shifting, chaotic world that takes its form from the memories, culture or beliefs of the souls who pass through. When a dead man awakens with only the memory of a figure in black, he sets into motion a chain of events that have truly mythic consequences.

Step into the boots of the dead man William Mason (voiced by Ron Perlman) and descend into the grim and gritty world of Purgatory in this fast-paced cover shooter which combines the fluidity of twin-stick controls and tactical cover usage. Put your skills to the test – Dodge behind cover as you try to outgun your enemies in the unknown procedurally generated hunting grounds. The Wild West has never been this dark.

Once you enter a room, you need to scout it, hopefully without being spotted, this can be done with the help of darkness, but here is the tricky part of this, in order to aim and kill your enemies you have to light them up  using the unlit  lanterns, this will  not only blind temporarily blind the enemy but also it will expose you, so you better start shooting or else you will get quite the damage. The higher the risk you take the better the reward you get.

The mayor downside is the controls (mouse + keyboard), there is delay in the responsiveness when aiming, and the “crosshair” doesn’t change while switching between long range and short range, and in multiple times  it was notice that you were shooting at a different enemy that  you are aiming at,   it’s like the game purposefully tilts your aim off as if you’re not supposed to hit that target.

The  design is beautiful, and does give that Wild West vibe, where  guns are accurate to the theme,  the story  is great and  having Ron Perlman (Hellboy, Sons of Anarchy) to narrate the game is a nice touch, but currently it feels if you are playing an early  version of the game (Alpha Version),  where bosses are bugged, delayed responses to command (noted when trying to cover), the mouse control to choose is reversed where your right click is on the left and viceversa and a lack of rebinding keys .

Is it good or bad? an answer is tough, everytime I try to go back to play it, I encounter this bugs that discourages me, but I continue playing it to reach the ending of it. Sounds,  Graphics, Story and many more are great, but in its current  state (which feels like an Alpha Stage of the game) I will have to give a 7.5 out of 10, taking into consideration that the score might change  in the future if this  bugs are resolved. If you  are interested to get this game, it is available in Steam for USD$19.99

Writer’s note: WoD was played using Keyboard and Mouse, the game experience might change for the user if a controller is used.
