Batman: The Animated Series meets tabletop gaming. So, put away your cellular telephone and turn off that darn flatscreen TV set.

IDW announced another BTAS game this week, following the tabletop adventures of 2018’s Gotham Under Siege and last year’s Rogues Gallery.

From Wednesday’s IDW press release:

SAN DIEGO, CA (January 22, 2020) – IDW Games (OTCQX: IDWM), in partnership with Warner Bros. Consumer Products and DC, announced today that Batman: The Animated Series Adventures – Shadow of the Bat will launch on Kickstarter on February 18, 2020. A miniatures-driven board game, Shadow of the Bat is part of the Adventures Universal Game System (AUGS), and is compatible with all other AUGS products. Arkham Asylum, a full-sized expansion, will also launch on Kickstarter alongside Shadow of the Bat. Both Shadow of the Bat and Arkham Asylum are expected to arrive to backers and in stores in Fall 2020.

IDW’s ‘Shadow of the Bat’ unboxed

As a BTAS nut, I’m hesitant to get overly excited for Shadow of the Bat. My Bat fan-powered knee jerk reaction is to flip out and jump right on the pre-order like I nearly did for IDW’s previous BTAS tabletop, Gotham Under Siege. Unfortunately, a lot of reviews for Under Siege criticized the game for being far too complex and confusing, therefore not very fun. So, I never purchased nor played it.

Admittedly, I haven’t heard a thing about Rogues Gallery besides some online reviews, most of which seem much more positive than Under Siege.  Part of me wonders if Rogues and SOTB are quick course corrections, judging by how close they are in terms of release dates (2018 then ’19 and now 2020); releasing a new 2020 game ASAP that’s much more fun to play, in order to get back in the good graces of BTAS/tabletop fans.

‘Shadow of the Bat’ Joker and Batman Mini figures

I’ll be the first in line for SOTB if its initial reviews are good. At this point, I will torture every one of my IRL friends to come over and play. But, not being much of a gamer in the first place–video nor tabletop–I know myself well enough: I won’t have the patience for another super complex/not-so-fun game, BTAS fig based or not.

Again, from IDW: “Both Shadow of the Bat and Arkham Asylum are expected to arrive at backers and in stores in Fall 2020.”
