Indie TCG Series – Boundless TCG: Interview with the creator

Welcome to our Indie TCG Series! We will be conducting a brief interview with Zachary Swanson, the creator of Boundless TCG. We reviewed this game a few days ago and you can find the link at the bottom. Remember, you still have time to be a part of this adventure by pledging on Kickstarter here. Without further ado, here is the interview.

Tell us about yourself

I’m Zak, the creator of Boundless TCG. I’m an avid TCG player and have been for the past 20 years of my life! I’ve always been a creative mind, but that manifested through music for a majority of my youth. It wasn’t until recent years that I’ve discovered my passion and drive to create games!

What is your gaming experience?

Apart from the occasional board game with the family, I’ve dabbled with a TON of trading card games throughout my gaming career. From Magic: The Gathering & YuGiOh! to Force of Will & Cardfight! Vanguard, my experience with most these games hasn’t been extremely competitive. My main trading card game outside of Boundless is Digimon!

What inspired you to create this game?

For a while I was creating custom YuGiOh! cards and playing online with a third party simulator, but there was still an empty space in my heart. I loved every card I made, down to the very reference artwork I borrowed, but something felt missing. It wasn’t until a talk with my brother-in-law that helped me realize it wasn’t my creations that weren’t filling the void, it was the game itself. That’s when I decided to make Boundless!

For how long, you’ve been  working on this game?

Since September 2021. Q4 2021 was spent writing the lore, finding our amazing lead artist, Mark, commissioning the artworks for our first 2 starter decks and designing the game itself. We’ve now accrued a total of 4 starter decks, multiple promo packs and are now on our 3rd full booster set!

What is the biggest challenge you have had in this project?

I’ve had to wear many hats as the creator of a TCG. Not only is it my job to create and balance the game, I am also responsible for marketing, logistics, public relations, and a variety of other things. It’s also nice to play the game sometimes, so I do my best to make time for that as well! Due to the amount of tasks I need to perform on a daily basis, the hardest part of this project is easily managing my time wisely.

What makes this game different from the others?

Boundless is a game that makes the player feel powerful, but not just because they’re simply creating large creatures or manifesting devastating spells. Players in Boundless feel as if they can actually manipulate the Spirit Realm in almost any way they wish. This game separates itself not by mechanics alone, but by a unique player experience!

Which is your favorite card and why?

The first card artwork I have ever designed was Ignistag. He may be just a Level 0 vanilla, but he holds a special place in my heart. He’s even the mascot of our upcoming reprint set, Mega Genesis!

What are the 3 main factors that players should support this project?

There are many factors behind why this game should reach across the world, but these main 3 are the easiest to see: the dedication of our team, the growth of our production, and the passion behind the product. With just a short amount of time, Boundless and this team have accomplished so much! We’ve had a successful and fully delivered Kickstarter launch already, we’re constantly chatting with our community in the Discord server and on Instagram, and there’s always something new to explore within the game’s landscape! If players still aren’t convinced, I guarantee that all they need is to play a game or two and they’ll be able to see for themselves just why they should back.

What are the future plans you see for the game? Is there any plan for Latin America?

The ideal scenario is to have Boundless across all regions globally by the end of 2024, including Latin America. There’s always talks of larger tournaments, but we need to walk before we can run. I always say that this is a marathon, not a sprint, so we need to keep ourselves on track and focus one step at a time. Currently, that step is pushing the game to local game stores, funding production of our initial product wave and growing our community. We’ll be working hard to get as many eyes on the game as possible. My dream is to stand and watch as thousands of players compete in a Boundless TCG National event.

For now, that’s all. As always, we invite you to stay tuned as we have something special planned for the coming days. Thank you very much for reading!
