John Stewart is the creator of the incredible series of comics, Gaslighters. C506 has the great honor of having the writer to interview him and talk more about his wonderful project.
John Stewart is an Air Force Veteran and comic writer that brought the acclaimed series, Gaslighters, to life. Come and discover with us this wonderful interview.
C506: John, it’s a great pleasure to have you with us. First of all, I would like you to tell us for new readers what Gaslighters is about?
John Stewart: Gaslighters is a unique zombie story that takes place in the near future. It is a tale about the “Beginning of the End” and it takes place during a time when people stand divided, but are forced to come together to face a global challenge spawned by a deadly manmade virus. The story begins when a military experiment to create the ultimate soldier goes tragically wrong and the deadly “Wasting Virus” is unleashed. Due to this catastrophic event, the old world dies and a new world is born. Within the darkness, monsters are reborn from the plague, but one of those monsters was created differently and she became known as Nightmare, the hunter of monsters.
Zoey Chase, a.k.a. Nightmare has been waiting years to score this major bounty. When the day finally comes and she is face to face and moments away from cashing in on her dream catch, the perp drudges up questions about her past she can’t answer. Orphaned at birth and not knowing the truth about the loss of her parents has never haunted her until her run in with this notorious killer that says he knows her secret past. Zoey starts to question everything she’s been told, everyone she trusts and all those she ever loved. Now, she’s not only hunting criminals, she’s chasing the truth about the day she was born a zombie.
C506: How did the creation of the series come to you? How does all start?
John Stewart: started writing Gasligthers in 2018 after my mother-in-law passed away from cancer (Leukemia). It was a heartbreaking, brutal experience to witness. I had spent a lot of time with her at the hospital. She was such an amazing and strong woman.
During my time spent with her, I started to notice things changing about myself. I was such a naïve person to think that I had all the time in the world to do the things I had said I’d do later when I had more time. Each and every day that I went to visit her was like a chisel chipping away at my soul. In the bay she stayed, people came and left all the time, I never got close enough to know their fate, but my heart hopes all fared better than she did in the end.
After she passed away, I thought about all the things I had not done, things I had put off, but wanted to do. The idea of Gaslighters came during my time spent at the hospital, I would write down ideas or notes as they came to me. Months later, I sat down and started writing Gaslighters and I used it as a way to help me cope with her passing.
C506: Also, I would like to know how the response of the first two issues has been? from Kickstarter I saw that they were a total success!
John Stewart: Wow, great question! Going into the first Kickstarter, I had no idea what would happen, but I had nothing to lose. I really needed money to print Gaslighters and I found Kickstarter to be a very comic friendly place. So, I gave it a try and hoped their site could help me raise the money I needed.
Luckily people found interest in Gaslighters and the response from our backers since then have been nothing but amazing. The Kickstarter for Gaslighters #2 was the one that I was most nervous about. I wasn’t sure if I did a good enough job for people to come back and support us again. After launching the second Kickstarter and hitting its goal in 2 days, I was so thrilled and the pressure was off! Having gone from never making a comic book before, to making one and getting it funded has been an awesome experience.
C506: I have seen some pages of the series and the art is wonderful, how has the development of art been in conjunction with story that you created?
John Stewart: I could not have asked for a better team to bring this project to life. I had to learn a lot of the processes involved in producing a comic book since it was all new to me. The team of artists I brought together really made this process easier and they have done an excellent job of developing visual content from my words or ideas.
C506: Additionally we have seen some amazing variant covers, how is it working with so many artists to bring this series to life?
John Stewart: It’s been a very rewarding experience to get to work with so many amazing and talented people in the art community. In the past, as a comic collector, I have always had favorite comic book cover artists and now, it is a thrill for me to be able to work with some of my favorite artists.
C506: What does the future hold for Gaslighters?
John Stewart: If possible, the future of Gaslighters is to bring it to comic book stores. Now that we have the funding to bring the story to life, we would like to get it in more hands. To do this, I need to find an independent publisher to help distribute our comics. Also, many people have been saying that Gaslighters would be an awesome TV show or streaming movie. That would be a dream come true.
C506: Finally, do you have any parting comments for our readers?
John Stewart: First, I would like to thank the great people of Collectible 506 for allowing me to share my story. You all are doing some fantastic and positive things here. Also, I’d like to thank the readers for taking the time to read this article about our comic. We are living in a fast-paced world and sometimes we forget to slow down. That brings me to the most important thing I would like everyone to take away from this interview, which is… Don’t let your life pass you by without doing those things you keep telling yourself you will get to do later on, when you have time. It may be one of the things that bring you the most joy. So, what are you waiting for?
C506: Thank you very much John for sharing this space with us and we really wish you the best with this project that has impressed us so much!
