The movies might not hold up today. But, these 80s-90s Bat Pop!s needed to be made.
Each flick was quite the production. Big, expensive, and for all their faults, they featured Batman in Blockbuster live action for the first time in history. Theaters in the 90s were more than a decade from being dominated by some new group of Avengers. The 90s, boys and girls, was the decade of the Bat!
Tim Burton’s Batman (‘’89 Batman‘) launched a majorly unplanned four films franchise at Warner Bros., all loosely tied together as soft sequels, each supposedly set in the same cinematic universe. Batman led to Burton’s Batman Returns in ’92. 1995, the Baton (yes, I said Baton) was then passed to director, Joel Schumacher for Batman Forever, Burton remaining as producer. And, the grand finale of the bizarre quadrilogy was the abysmal sequel that killed the franchise for nearly another decade, 1997’s Batman and Robin.
In London (interestingly, where much of ’89 was shot), Funko has unveiled their new wave of Pop! vinyl figures for 90s cinematic Batman.
On 1/20/20, Funko unveiled concept designs of the new Bat Pop!s for London Toy Fair 2020. And, as of 1/21 writing this, there are now photos on Instagram from the event, with a few of these new concepts in vinyl live action.
- Starting with ’89 Batman, we have 2 Jack Nicholson Jokers, 1 chase variant Pop!
- Next up is Batman Returns Danny Devito Penguin and Michelle Pfeiffer Catwoman.
- From Batman Forever, there’s Tommy Lee Jones Two Face and Jim Carrey Riddler.
- And, for the campiest of all big budget Bat camp, we have Uma Thurman Poison Ivy and Arnold Schwarzenegger Mr. Freeze of Batman and Robin.
All the Batman classic movie Pop!s above are available for pre-order from Entertainment Earth. In addition to the Bat, DC Funko Pop! reveals from London this year include Deathstroke, Red Hood, a Hot Topic Exclusive Mad Love Harley Quinn, and a 10″ Super Sized Joker Pop! based on Heath Ledger’s gritty portrayal in The Dark Knight.
