Hello indie game lovers! Today, the spotlight is on Warlord, a game that had a wildly successful Kickstarter campaign, reaching its funding goal in just 5 minutes. For those familiar with the CCG (Collectible Card Game) scene, Warlord might ring a bell from a few years back. This game masterfully combines the best elements of Dungeons & Dragons with the CCG universe. Readers are encouraged to visit Team Covenant to order a box, which is 100% draftable—one of the favorite formats.
Warlord: A Unique CCG Experience
Warlord stands out from other CCGs due to its meaningful spatial component (ranks), the absence of resource generation, and the excitement of every action revolving around a d20 roll. This adds a layer of fun and unpredictability that many players find appealing.
Game Formats and Features
Warlord offers a variety of formats, including an excellent head-to-head format, a “vintage” format with older cards (called Ancients), a multiplayer format (Alliance), and next-level Organized Play with the Overlord system. There’s even a PvE mode on the way!
Partnership with Kingswood Games
Atlas Games has partnered with Kingswood Games to offer booster boxes for the first set and beyond, each featuring an exclusive alt-art promo card. The new set, “Into the Accordlands,” will kick off the next chapter of the game with updated card templating, cleaner text and abilities, and a mix of staple reprints and newly-designed cards. Readers can check out the game in action on the YouTube channel linked on the website.
Booster Box Contents
Each booster box contains 24 packs and is fully draftable. Booster packs include:
- 10 commons
- 3 uncommons
- 1 Rare or Legendary
- 1 Foil or Extended Art
Orders in multiples of six will be shipped as a sealed case.
Reviving a Classic
Kingswood Games, co-founded by Woodrow Hood and Josh King, has teamed up with AEG to bring Warlord: Saga of the Storm back to life. With updated rules, card templating, and a regular release schedule, now is the perfect time to roll for initiative in this classic card battler.
Learning to Play
Warlord is known as “the game you already know how to play” due to its use of a d20 and popular TTRPG mechanics. Players build their decks around a Warlord and starting army, commanding their forces in snappy back-and-forth turn actions using a d20 to resolve spells, attacks, and abilities. A video is available to learn the basics in under 10 minutes,
Factions and Classes
Each Warlord and character in the game belongs to one of the six factions of the Accordlands, and every card has one or more of the four classes. Each faction and class offers unique mechanics and strategies, ensuring no two feel exactly alike.
Backwards Compatibility
Warlord has an existing card pool of over 4600 cards from previous publications. The multiplayer Alliance and non-rotating Ancients formats allow cards from throughout Warlord’s history, while the rotating Saga and Draft formats feature new cards and reprints.
Art and Illustrations
Atlas Games is proud to work exclusively with human artists, including card game illustrators, comic book artists, RPG artists, storyboard artists, and many veterans who previously contributed to Warlord’s rich visual history. The art direction of Warlord illustrations is hand-painted using traditional methods, maintaining a high fantasy style from the late 90s and early 2000s.
Booster Boxes and Starter Decks
Booster Boxes are fully draftable and come with the Kickstarter exclusive “Meet at the Inn!” extended art promo card and any relevant Stretch Goals. Each Starter Deck is a full-size 50-card deck with fixed contents, including one Warlord, a starting army, and accompanying cards that contribute to the deck’s overall strategy. Each Starter Deck also includes one Starter-exclusive extended art Warlord, one Booster Pack, and one d20.
