One of my favorite things in existence is Kevin Smith’s Fatman Beyond podcast. The show’s been an obsession of mine going back to its previous title, Fatman on Batman, inspiring me heavily years later to create my own life changing podcast in 2017, Above and Batman Beyond (Beyond was in my title first, so I joke that my show influenced Kevin Smith’s later work).
On yesterday’s Fatman, screenwriter, Zack Stentz (Thor, X-Men: First Class), was featured guest of the pod. Smith’s co-host/TV writer, Marc Bernardin, asked Stentz a question that lead to some fascinating Fox Marvel movie secrets circa 2011.
From Bernardin: “What is your favorite movie that you wrote that won’t ever come out?”
ZS: My ex partner and I, while we were working at Fox and working on X-Men: First Class, we did a secret movie for them. I can’t tell you what the plot was, but I can tell you that it used all of the Marvel characters that Fox had at the time, in 2011. It used the X-Men, it used the Fantastic Four, it used Daredevil, it used Deadpool. Because, again, Daredevil was still at Fox at the time.
It was a really cool freaking script. And, we almost had Paul Greengrass directing it, which would have been really cool. But, he had another project to do instead. It didn’t end up going, but it was a script I’m really proud of, and it would have been really good.
So, X-Men. Fantastic Four. Daredevil. Deadpool. One movie. Good lord, what a different Marvel Foxverse we would have if that movie ever came out. An Avenger-like Fox team up flick of their own.
Now, for those unfamiliar, Disney since has absorbed the Foxverse of Marvel characters and the rest of Fox with it. But, years before the mouse at the fox, this movie that never could sounds like a clear precursor to the multitude of connected cinematic universes we’re getting today.
Check out Stentz’ most recent screenplay gone good, Rim of the World, now streaming on Netflix and directed by McG.
