What is Chronicles of Arcane? It is a game created by Ryan Klesmit, set in a mystical world of arcane magic and ancient powers. In this game, players can unleash their inner sorcerer, summon powerful creatures, cast spells, and harness the elements to outsmart their opponents and become the ultimate master of arcane arts. With stunning artwork and immersive storytelling, Chronicles of Arcane transports you to a universe where the Essence’s reign supreme, challenging you to build decks, strategize your moves, and overcome your rivals to become the most formidable mage of the realm. So, how does the gameplay work? Like many trading card games, Chronicles of Arcane aims to reduce your opponent’s health to 0 before they do the same to you. The starting health for each player depends on the number of players involved. In a 1v1 game, players start with 30 health, while in a 1v1v1 game, players start with 35 health. In a game with four or more players, the starting health is 40. To determine the first player, each player rolls a d20 dice, and the player with the highest number goes first. From there, the play progresses clockwise from the first player position.
At the start of the game, each player shuffles their deck and draws seven cards from the top. Players may choose to mulligan, which means they can redraw a new hand with fewer cards. The first player then begins the game.
One of the unique aspects of Chronicles of Arcane is the existence of different essence types, each with its own play style. The game features six main essence types:
- Earth: Utilize the power of the earth to overwhelm opponents with powerful beasts, druids, wood elves, and rock golems, among others.
- Fire: Channel the dominating force of flame with fire dragons, pyromancers, fire elementals, and more.
- Water: Display the incredible raw power of water and ice through sea creatures, merfolk, ice mages, frost dragons, and other aquatic entities.
- Air: Call upon the terrifying unbridled energy of the skies with sky beasts, cloud walkers, djinn, and similar entities.
- Void: Manipulate dark energy to your advantage with necromancers, vampires, void beasts, and other nefarious beings.
- Neutral: There are also neutral essence cards that don’t belong to any specific essence type. These cards work in any deck and offer a variety of different uses.
Within Chronicles of Arcane, there are six different types of cards players can utilize:
- Essences: These cards can be exhausted to generate one essence of their essence type, which is then used to pay the cost of playing other cards or certain abilities. Only one essence card can be played per turn.
- Creatures: Creatures form the foundation of your deck. They include beasts, warriors, mages, dragons, and more. Creatures have various traits, abilities, and starting attack power and health. They can attack and defend on their owner’s turn.
- Spells are one-time-use cards that perform specific actions or abilities before being sent to the owner’s sanctum. Spells are the only card type that can be used during an opposing player’s turn.
- Artifacts: Artifact cards benefit their owner when placed on the battlefield. They may grant traits, remove traits, or alter the conditions of the battlefield. Artifacts have health points and can be targeted by attacks but cannot attack or defend themselves.
- Ancients: Ancients are powerful legendary beings or entities in Chronicles of Arcane. These cards possess unique abilities that support your deck and its creatures and spells. Ancients enter the battlefield with 0 attack power and cannot be declared as blockers.
- Domains: Domains represent influential locations or realms within the game. Domain cards provide specific battlefield advantages and/or conditions that affect all players. Like artifacts, domains enter the battlefield with 0 attack power and cannot attack or defend.
This is just a brief overview of the game, and more information and images will be available during the Kickstarter campaign. In the meantime, you can visit the Chronicles of Arcane website for updates and further details.
